How I work

If you’ve never hired a writer before, you may be wondering how copywriters work, and what it will cost.

Even if you have worked with a copywriter previously, not all of us work the same.

Either way, you’re in safe hands. My processes are simple, so we can focus on the business of developing great health copy.

7 steps to great copy

Step 1: Initial chat

We chat about your needs. This can be done via the phone, Skype or sometimes in person. Please be aware however, that I usually charge for my time to have a face-to-face meeting.

The aim of this meeting is for me to gather enough information about your project, to see if I’m the right copywriter for you.

Step 2: Briefing document

If we both believe we can work together, I will send you a briefing document to fill in. This will provide me with more information about your project so I can give you an accurate quote. The information you provide will also help me write your content, so the more information you provide, the better the end copy will be. This is a very important part of the process. In fact, I wrote a blog post about it, which you can read here.

Step 3: Proposal/Quote

I send you a Proposal which includes a quote, along with my Terms and Conditions. If you’re happy with the quote and wish to engage me for you project, you sign the proposal and send it back to me.

Step 4: First instalment payment

Before any work commences, I require 50% of the full fee upfront. This is pretty standard with most copywriters. I will send you an invoice for the amount, and once I receive payment, your job is booked in.

The invoice for the remaining balance will be sent along with the first draft of copy. This will be payable within 14 days of issue.

Preferred method of payment is direct bank transfer, or via PayPal.

Step 5: The writing process

There are a few steps involved in the writing process. All projects (unless we have agreed otherwise) involve two (2) rounds of amends, and one round of proofreading.

Unless otherwise agreed, feedback on the first and second drafts should be provided within 2-5 days.

Step 6: Releasing copyright

Copyright is released to you upon receipt of final payment. Until the final payment has been received, ownership of the copy remains with The Melbourne Health Writer.

Step 7: Testimonial/Referral

Because most of my work comes from referrals, client testimonials are important to my business. It would be greatly appreciated if you could provide a testimonial, once our project is complete.

Pretty easy right? And at the end of it all, we’ll both feel warm and fuzzy.

“A highly professional, accomplished writer who is a pleasure to deal with.”

I have worked with Nerissa before and have always been impressed by her professionalism as well as her skill, so she was the first person I thought of when we had to create almost 70 emails for our nurture campaign.

It was a big job and she handled it admirably, not just conducting the necessary research and producing the work to brief, but also successfully dealing with numerous stakeholders – something that’s of utmost importance in our organisation.

That I was able to entrust her with this, without acting as go-between, says as much about her as her talent for the written work does. Nerissa is a pleasure to deal with, and I am happy to recommend her to anyone looking for a highly professional and accomplished writer who will take the time to understand a brief and create content that will cut through the noise.
