Here’s a quick snapshot of the health of Australians.

Australian health trends

  • Heart disease is our nation’s number one killer.

  • Nearly half of Aussies will experience a mental health disorder.

  • Around 65% of Australians are overweight or obese — a risk factor for many chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer.

  • Around half suffer from at least one of eight chronic diseases —arthritis; asthma; back pain and problems; cancer; cardiovascular disease; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; diabetes; and mental health conditions — with 87 per cent of Australians aged over 65 experiencing at least one.

  • More than 1 million Australians now have diabetes.

  • Just under half (45 per cent) of Australians get enough exercise.

  • 95 per cent fail to eat enough fruit and vegetables.

Do Aussies care about their health?

With statistics like the above, it can be easy to assume that Australians in general, don’t care too much about their health.

However, new research released by IBIS World indicates that Australians are more health conscious than they’ve ever been. Over the past five years, health consciousness has risen and this trend is expected to continue over the next five years.

That means, that if you’re in the health industry, you’re likely to have more Aussies searching out your services.

But don’t despair if you’re not a fixture on the current health-scape of Australia. You can still make the most of these health trends and use them as leverage to build your business.

What this means for your business

Obviously, poor health is nothing to be celebrated. But what if I told you, you could boost your business while simultaneously contributing to a solution?

With Australians becoming more health conscious, there’s a growing need for high-quality, accurate health content, which provides a very real opportunity for you, to grow your business.

How?

  • Offering useful health information to your clients shows you care about their health and wellbeing, thereby increasing the likelihood they will turn to you for a solution to their problem.
  • Providing up-to-date, factual health information builds trust with your audience, helping you to become a leader in your industry.
  • Helping your clients make positive changes to their health means they’ll see you as an integral part of their health journey, and will keep coming back to you.

How you can make the most of this opportunity

If you’re working in the health industry, you’re already a step ahead, particularly if you understand how your product can meet their unique health issues. However, make the effort to really understand and identify other health needs they may have. While you may not be able to provide solutions to all their needs, you can offer them useful information, which most of your clients will appreciate.

If your business is outside the health industry, you can still take advantage of this current health trend. You just need to be a little creative. For example:

  • Finance — Address the issue of stress, worry and anxiety when it comes to finances, and include a blog about stress relief or mental health.

  • Hospitality/catering — Use your platform to discuss the importance of food safety and avoiding food-borne illness.

  • Automotive— Focus on the safety aspects of your products, emphasising the importance of keeping your client and their families safe on the roads.

  • Kitchen and bathroom — Write a blog about the importance of staying hydrated, while simultaneously promoting your wonderful tap-wear.

  • Education — Provide useful information about ‘brain food’ to aid study, or discuss the importance of sleep for exam results.

Get the idea? Almost every industry can weave some kind of health message into their content.
